MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Each year parents, students and staff are consistently
amazed how quickly the days goes, as time and energy are given to bringing
together the efforts of 2011, whilst, at the same time preparing for 2012.
The air is filled with a mixture of excitement and challenge. As with all
organising, schools are constantly moving ahead seeking each of us to be
resilient and supportive of each other enabling all, especially our young
women, to make wise choices. This is especially relevant to our Year 12
students as they embark on the final stage of their transition from school
life to independence. This was specifically highlighted at our Year 12
Assembly last Friday. Our 2011 seniors are to be congratulated on the
spirit of thanks and appreciation they wove through the presentations,
acknowledging all those who had supported them during their journey.
Special thanks to Mrs Hohn, mother of Rachel and Mrs Davidson who spoke on
behalf of parents and staff. We are confident that the girls will take with
them the spirit of St Saviour’s and will use their individual gifts
wisely.
A special Term 4 thanks and tribute is extended to all
involved in the highly successful musical production of Back to the 80’s.
Energy and excitement was abound as our expose of talent, skills and hard
work came together for their presentations. In extending my congratulations
to the talented entertainers and efficient backstage and design crew, I
acknowledge the commitment given to this event by a number of dedicated
staff, lead by the Ms Guidice as director and producer. The selfless giving
of extra hours to ensure the girls were able to do their best remained
their aim. Thanks are extended to Mrs Bowes, Mrs Gray, Ms McNamara Glasson,
Mrs Creedon and Mr Fitzpatrick. An event such as this gives practical
witness to the College’s commitment to offering a learning environment that
explores and enhances interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences.
Last week I was delighted to attend the official ceremony
for the awarding of The Empire Theatres Foundation Youth Bursaries. These
are offered to youth who have demonstrated commitment and achievement in a
area of the Arts. Congratulations are extended to Miss Bridget Jurgs – Year
11 and Miss Talia Dyball – Year 12 on their bursary to attend professional
workshops at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Sydney.

Principal
Our 2012 budget has now been endorsed and we are
therefore in a position to provide you with an update (see link) on fees,
levies and charges for 2012. This information will be available on the
College website and a copy will also be sent out with the final (November)
fee accounts next week.
For parents of year 12 students the year is fast coming
to a close. Our year 12 Final Assembly was held on Friday, October 28 and
it was pleasing to see so many parents join us for this Assembly to
celebrate the achievements of the year 12 cohort and to wish them the best
for their final exam block. Parents have received a letter detailing the
last week of activities for the year 12 students.
Our Leadership breakfast that traditionally says thank
you to our current leaders and welcomes our new leaders will be held this
Friday. Parents of these leaders have received their invitation to the
breakfast and we will be served by the year 11 and 12 Hospitality students
under the guidance of Talia O’Callaghan.
Our year 10 students returned from Camp on Wednesday with
plenty of stories on their few days at the beach. They participated in
activities ranging from surf lessons to team building.
Finally, our Musical, Neil Goodings, Back the 80’s was a huge success. Director Mrs Giudice and
the team have worked hard over the last few months and the end result was
spectacular. Our cast performed to large, vocal crowds on both nights. It
was very entertaining and a real credit to all those involved. The Musical
really showcased the talent we have here at St Saviour’s.

FROM AP CURRICULUM
Year 10 Camp
At the Currimundi Active Recreation Centre, our year 10
students enjoyed three days where they were encouraged to try new
experiences, to solve problems and be challenged to work together as a
team. At the beach, many were able to ride a wave on a surf board, while
others struggle with balance and resorted to enjoy body surfing after many
attempts. On the high ropes, they were challenged individually to overcome
high heights and work as a team. The most challenging exercise was to
devise strategies, while working together, to bring an ‘injured person’
across the course in the Alpine Rescue. The girls also experienced team
games and the construction of a catapult using their creativity and knot
tying skills.
The camp was a great success as all learned more about
themselves in new situations and more about their peers as a major focus
was to knit the group together by encouraging understanding, cooperation
and fellowship. Please review the photographs of the camp attached.
The year 10’s spent three days at Currimundi for camp.
All of the girls had a wonderful time, branching out of everyday friendship
groups to partake in a range of team activities. After camp each one of us
left with a smile on our faces. We were able to leave with the feeling of
personal and team building accomplishment.

Year 12 Examination block
The examination block commences next Monday. Students
have been issued with a schedule. Please note that all students should
arrive at school at least 15 minutes before the commencement of the
examination period. Please encourage your daughters to remain focused and
to revise for examinations thoroughly and fully prepare for multi-modal
presentations. There can be significant movement in levels of achievement
based on their final results.
Exit Levels of Achievement and Student Achievement
Indicators (SAI) for Year 12 students
On the final day of schooling for our Year 12 students,
all will be issued with a provisional Statement of Achievement for all
their studies. For authority subjects, the students receive a SAI that
indicates their achievement in relation to other students studying the
subject. For large subject groups, this is a number between 200 and 400,
400 being awarded to the top of the subject. For small subject groups the
SAI is a number between 1 and 10. It is a requirement of all students to
check the classlists of SAIs that will be posted in the Cathedral Centre
during morning tea following the Yr12 Valedictory Eucharist on Friday,
November 18. Students are asked to note any concerns they have about their
SAI to the Assistant Principal Curriculum by the end of this day. The
College has many checks in place to ensure that the exit levels of
achievement and SAIs are correct but it is important that students review
their positions relative to other students to ensure that the data is
correct. It is the SAIs that are used in the calculation of the Overall
Position (OP) issued Saturday, December 17, 9am through
the QSA Student Connect or through SMS. To access the Student
Connect website all students are to know their LUI number and password. All
students have received this information during the year.
Important dates for year 12 students

LIBRARY NEWS
Sometimes we forget about the importance of Libraries and
Library Staff in our schools. Following is a reminder of all the great work
that happens in our school library.
What Librarians & Google are for...
Librarians are there:
To help, aid, assist. To teach, collate, enthuse. To
catalogue, index, arrange, organise. To find, discover, promote, display.
To interest, intrigue, amuse and amaze. To instil wonder. To help children,
adults, old people, the underprivileged, the rich, the poor, those with
voices and those without. To protect resources, to archive them, to store
them, to save them for the future. To provide differing viewpoints, to
engender thought, conversation, research, fun. To provide the best answer
possible, to match the answer to the enquirer, to provide just enough
information without overwhelming the user, but enough to always help. To
better a local community, a company, a school, a college, an organisation,
a country, the world.
On September 17 and 18, the cheer squad of St Saviour’s
College travelled down to the Brisbane entertainment centre and competed in
the Asia Pacific Grand finals, otherwise known as World Cup and Cheer
Nationals. With over 1,500 cheerleaders from all teams in Australia and all
over the world (including America and New Zealand), we knew we were up
against tough competition. However, we did not let this deter us from
running out in front of hundreds of people and performing with 200% effort.
We came fifth in division for our pom routine and 4th for group stunting
routine. This is highly noted for our squad because we are still very new
and still learning. We look forward to giving you a report from our next
cheer comp this Sunday!
The 2011 Australian Mathematics Competition was held on
the 4th of August and 122 students from Year 10 to 12 sat for the
competition. Hundreds of thousands of students from over 40 countries
entered. Students from grade 10, 11 and 12 entered and I am pleased to
announce that the College had two students received High Distinctions,
Kelly Dahl Year 12 and Lauren Hickling Year 12. With 3 Distinctions, 28
Credits and 7 Proficiency awards.
Hannah Topp, Mariah Martin, Bree Ann Pennells,
Rhiana Mason,

On a side note, exams are soon approaching and Monday
Afternoon Mathematics Tutorials will be running every Monday afternoon for
the remainder of the Term, 3:15 – 4:45pm in KR9/10 (don’t forget to bring
some afternoon tea!)
ICAS English Achievements
Students in years 8 and 11
participated in ICAS English in August. This test is designed to assess
students’ ability in Reading (literary and factual), Textual devices,
Syntax and Vocabulary. This year the EAA or Educational Assessment
Australia celebrates its 30th year of delivering ICAS to Australian
students.
Several students gained a Credit in this year’s
competition: Danika French, Ashleigh Hamill, Jacinta Hoffman, Kaitlyn
McKellar and Julieanne Simbina, Naomi Hansen,
Emma McGaw, Ashlee Ralph, Ashleigh Rodgers, Abby Saville, Sarah Slatter and
Hayley Taylor. Lauren Greendyke, participating as a Year 12 student,
achieved a Credit also.
Congratulations go to Sarah Gale for achieving a High
Distinction and Hannah Berry for her Distinction. These students’ results
were in the top 1% and 10% respectively of all year 11 students who
participated in Queensland.

University of the Sunshine Coast Options Evening (Mon
19 Dec)
With the release of OPs on 17 December, USC
Options Evening on Monday 19 December is the perfect opportunity
for Year 12 students to get their questions about 2012 entry into USC
answered.
One-on-one advice
Students can talk one-on-one with USC staff about:
Study options - there’s more
than 70 programs from which to choose
Admissions to USC including
pathways to university
Why we're rated 5 stars for teaching quality in
the 2012 Good Universities Guide
Surviving (and thriving) in the first year
Students can take a campus tour led by current students
and find out everything they need to know about campus life.
Students can also get tips on how to survive (and thrive)
in their first year of uni. Parents, partners and students are invited to
attend a seminar at 4:30pm, 5pm or 5:30pm to find out what to expect during
a semester of study, how to prepare for uni study and the range of support
services available at USC.
New program at USC: new combined degree Bachelor of Nursing Science/Bachelor of
Midwifery * is an accelerated program which offers expanded
career options and the opportunity to achieve two qualifications in just
three and a half years.
* Program is subject to approval by the Nursing and
Midwifery Board of Australia.
Students interested in studying business at USC no longer
have to nominate their area of specialisation when submitting their
preferences to QTAC. Students choosing the Bachelor of Business degree can
still specialise in one or more areas (eg. marketing, tourism or
information systems), but now don’t have to nominate this field of study at
this stage.
USC’s Business degrees give students the fundamentals of
business in their first year so that they get a taste of the broad fields
of business before choosing the area/s in which they want to
specialise.
Tertiary Preparation Programs
For those students who do not receive the OP they require
to gain entry to University or have completed a non-op pathway and want to
be eligible to enter University, there is the option of doing a Tertiary
Preparation Program (TPP). These courses are offered at various
institutions and in various ways. If you need to do TPP make sure you look
into the various ways (on campus, online etc) it can be done and where.
Most TPP courses are offered free however they usually give you guaranteed
direct entry to the University in which you study it. So if for example you
want to gain entry to UQ but do the TPP at USQ you will need to check how
this affects your QTAC selection rank and whether UQ will accept it.
I have provided some information on the TPP offered at
USQ, UQ (Ipswich) and USC below. There are many other available options
that you could research depending on where you would like to study.
USQ Tertiary Preparation Program
We have created the Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP), a
free program that gives you all the skills you need to undertake your
degree. It also guarantees you entry to a USQ undergraduate (first)
degree.
The TPP is offered via distance education or
on-campus at any of our three
campuses* (Toowoomba, Springfield or Fraser Coast). This means that
you can complete the program around your work and life commitments, study
at your own pace and at a time of day or week that suits you.
* Not all courses are available at each campus. When your
application is submitted staff will let you know if the courses you need to
study are available on-campus.
In some instances prospective students may need
additional academic development, a new start or an opportunity to improve
their career and/or personal position, the Tertiary Preparation Program
develops students to a Year 12 equivalent level and is a two trimester
program (2 x 14 weeks). Students study 5 subjects from a list of 9 which
when successfully completed can be used to gain a QTAC ranking.
This is a fee free program. Typically, school leavers
wishing to revisit their Year 12 OP may wish to consider this program.
Entry is via an application and interview undertaken by the College. There
is an intake in January and another in May for this program.
The TPP is conducted at the UQ Ipswich Campus and
students have access to all of the University resources, services and
facilities.
Further information on the College and these courses can
be obtained by email info@uqcollege.edu.au or web
www.uqcollege.edu.au or you can ring Rod Arthur, CEO
on 3381 1551.
Changes to University of the Sunshine Coast’s Tertiary
Preparation Pathway application process
The University of the Sunshine Coast offers The Tertiary
Preparation Pathway (TPP) as a preparatory / bridging program designed to
impart the skills and knowledge to succeed in degree studies. Students
learn a range of skills including academic writing, time management,
research, exam strategies and presentation skills.
TPP may be used as an alternative entry pathway into many
tertiary study courses. On completion, students can apply via direct entry
to most USC undergraduate programs. Students seeking admission to other
universities can apply via QTAC.
Due to recent changes, please be advised, all applicants applying for the Tertiary Preparation Pathway Program
(TPP) for 2012 should be directed to apply via QTAC. This is also an
opportunity for current Year 12 students submitting their QTAC applicants
to include TPP as back-up preference should they not get into their other
preferences listed. Further details about the program and how to apply are
available at www.usc.edu.au/TPP
2012 C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship
The 2012 C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship opens on Monday 5th December and closes on Friday
6th January 2012.
The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is one of the most generous
privately funded scholarships available to undergraduate students in
Australia. They are valued at up to $60,000 over four years.
Information about the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship and an
application form are available at <http://www.hawkerscholarship.org> or by
contacting the secretary to the Trustees on 08 8127 1654.
The Charles Hawker Scholarship perpetuates the memory of
scholar, soldier, pastoralist and statesman Charles
Allan Seymour Hawker and commemorates the achievements of one of
Australia’s most respected pastoral pioneers.
The scholarships are available to all Australian
students. Since 1991, the majority have been awarded to students entering
their first year of university study.
Selection is largely based on personal qualities as well
as academic ability. Undergraduate Hawker Scholars are able to attend a
range of Australian educational institutions.
Careers and Pathways Consultations
I am available to see students and parents on Thursdays
from 9am – 4pm to discuss careers and pathways options. Please make
appointments with Mrs Rowe at the Student Services desk.
